STAT+: Top Boston hospitals clash over Medicare Advantage network after split
Eldon Clingan, an 88-year-old retired accountant, has been treated for cancer by the same specialist at Dana-Farber Institute for over two decades and credits her with saving his life. Starting Oct. 1, his Medicare Advantage plan — operated by the insurance arm of Mass General Brigham — will no longer include Dana-Farber in its network, forcing him to either find a new oncologist or switch insurance plans.
The plan covers about 20,500 members, though only a fraction receive cancer care at Dana-Farber at any one time. The move underscores a growing dispute among top Boston hospitals over Medicare Advantage network participation.
