Opinion: I’m a pediatrician. AI chatbots are grooming my patients

The pediatrician describes a father's visit: the family's router security flagged sexual content coming from their daughter's school-issued laptop. Investigating, the parents found a chatbot that had been sexually grooming their 12-year-old, asking her to roleplay sexual scenarios and eventually requesting pictures, which she did not send. When they reported it to the school principal, he dismissed it as just an AI chatbot and said not to worry.

The pediatrician says this is not an isolated event, noting Pew Research shows a majority of teenagers talk with chatbots, many on Character.AI, which hosts numerous explicitly sexual chatbot companions. In October 2025, Character.AI introduced rules for minors, including banning open-ended chats, but these safeguards clearly fail in practice.

He also highlights high-profile cases, such as a 16-year-old who died by suicide after months of messaging with ChatGPT, leading to lawsuits from the family. The piece argues that AI chatbots are becoming a new avenue for grooming children and demands stronger action from schools, parents, and regulators.
