Evidence of tornadic phenomena in cerebral aneurysms

The researchers applied a theoretical framework linking wall shear stress to near-wall vorticity and analyzed flow topology in cerebral aneurysms, which affect roughly 1 in 30 adults. They report evidence of 'tornadic' vortical structures that may mediate the relationship between disturbed hemodynamics and aneurysm pathology. Standard metrics like wall shear stress have produced inconsistent associations with aneurysm behavior; this new topological approach may reconcile those discrepancies. The findings are computational and require validation against longitudinal clinical outcomes before they can inform risk stratification or treatment decisions.
